CIUDAD
Since their inception, Ciudad has endured several labels to describe the band and their music. Among others, they’ve been called ‘geek rock’ or ‘nerd pop’ by both the media and their fans.
Formed in 1994, when they were barely into their teens, the band began as a school project. But, having written enough material (much more than was required for class), they started gigging and playing at the legendary rock venues of Manila. They gained a considerable following with their fresh sound: a combination of schoolboy rock, slacker pop, and a dose of punk—all framed by catchy melodies. Through the years, the band went on to release five albums, and was soon recognized as one of the best and most distinctive musical acts in the Philippines.
The release of their fourth record, “Bring Your Friends,” in 2008 saw the band expand their sound and their reach to critical acclaim. Its new brand of poignant melodies and heartfelt lyrics introduced them to a wider audience, including bringing them to New York City to be part of the official lineup of the 2009 CMJ Music Marathon.
“Follow The Leader,” the group’s fifth album, was released in 2012, further enriching their sound by experimenting with new studio techniques and instrumentation. The band released two new singles in 2017 and 2018, the snarky, upbeat, rock anthem “Caught Me At The Worst Time,” and the smooth, 80's yacht-rock inspired “Get You Closer.” This late 2018, Ciudad follows up these tracks with another single, “Tiny Apartment,” a feel-good pop ballad that showcases the band’s signature bittersweet melodies and harmonies.
